Cypress

Nature's Eternal Wood

Cypress has been the wood of choice for builders, skilled craftsmen and artisans since the earliest days of recorded history.  Used by the ancient Egyptians to encase mummified kings, by the Romans to sculpt images of Gods, and by European masters to carve great cathedral doors, we are surrounded by countless examples of the durability and longevity of cypress wood.  The oldest log structure in the United States, (in St. Augustine Florida) was built of cypress and is over 280 years old and still standing.

What is so special about cypress that it, alone, has been able to endure this test of time?  Cypress has a natural oil preservative called cypresseine which makes the wood naturally resistant to insects and decay.  Additionally,  the annual growth rings of cypress trees are thin and compact meaning that the wood has a higher density and lower water retention rate than other types of wood.   The high density and low water content of cypress provide two additional and highly desirable qualities.  First cypress wood does not shrink and crack like other logs and second the wood acts as a better thermal insulator, making it a more energy efficient building material.

When it comes to building your new log home why would you want to use anything less?
