How Did Cherokee Village become the first planned vacation/retirement community in America?

In the early 1950's a visionary attorney from Memphis name John A Cooper developed the original concept of a planned community.  His vision was to develop a vacation/retirement community open to all ages and incomes where good people could live and enjoy all the wonders and recreational activities of outdoor life without sacrificing the comforts and benefits of city living.   In 1954 John Cooper launched his first planned community on the 15,000 Acres of lush green rolling and forested hills that now comprises Cherokee Village.  Mr. Cooper's project became an instant success and served for many years as the model for other planned communities throughout the United States.   Today, Cherokee Village is a fully mature community with 7 Lakes, 2 Championship Golf courses, 2 Recreation centers, a hospital, a private airstrip and other amenities to numerous to list.  Paved streets and utilities exist throughout the village.  However,  many areas remain sparsely populated, thus offering a diverse selection of possible building locations for new home owners.  More than 4,600 residents now call Cherokee Village Home.
